Dargerism: Contemporary Artists and Henry Darger

Dargerism: Contemporary Artists and Henry Darger

New York’s American Folk Art Museum brings together 11 contemporary artists from all over the world who have been influenced by the visionary self-taught artist Henry Darger. Darger’s epic paintings of the Vivian Girls — the abolitionist heroines of his fantastical writings — hang beside the younger artists’ work on two floors. Some exhibit obvious relationships with the Chicago recluse, such as Justin Lieberman, who overlays Darger’s backgrounds with images of nudes and young beauty queens, and Anthony Goicolea, who recreates Darger’s imagery in photographs. Others, including Amy Cutler, Trenton Doyle Hancock, and Grayson Perry, display similar interests in myth-making, queer affect, and utopian striving. By highlighting the outsider artist’s growing influence on contemporary art, Dargerism challenges the art-historical canon, as it considers the aesthetic possibilities of narrative, struggle, and transgression. - Thomas Lax

John Dyer Baizley

Image

I just ran across some of the artwork of John Dyer Baizley. Frankly I was bowled over. I’m a huge fan of the gorgeous line work in art nouveau illustration and have tried my hand in it many times. Where I failed, John has succeeded in spades. He has moved the style from it’s existing nature meets fairies to organic death metal.

3D LED Lighting

Image

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology merges the concepts of lighting and art with this spectacular 3D LED piece, dubbed NOVA. Created for the institute’s 150th anniversary, the display is made up of 25000 lightballs.

Incredibly it can display 16 million colors per second. The behemoth, which weighs 3.3 tonnes, is currently displayed at the Zurich train station’s main hall, where it will live until September 2009.

Tokyo Bar

Worth checking out is the Tokyo Bar in the Tribeca neighborhood of NYC. Not to be mistaken with the cheesy dance club of the same name in Montreal, is the upstairs bar to the B-Flat underground cocktail den. This hip bar sports manga covered walls and “new Japanese comfort food” served tapas style, by chef Kensuke Kuri from Lan.

Definitely pick up a pack of matches as a souvenir or as a nice conversation piece for your coffee table.

Even their sidewalk projected logo is cool.

Maotai or bai jiu

Kweichow Moutai liquor(Five-Star)

Maotai, or Moutai (spelling used by the producing company), is arguably the most famous Chinese liquor, or baijiu. It is produced in the Guizhou province of southwestern China. Maotai, which classifies as “sauce-flavoured” (酱香, jiangxiang), is distilled from fermented sorghum and now comes in different versions ranging in alcohol content from the standard 53% by volume down to 35%.Kweichow’s brand comes in the above shown, lighter fluid bottle. You have to respect a beverage that tells it like it is.

Maotai is named after the town with the same name near Zunyi in Renhuai, Guizhou Province, where winemaking has a very long history. The Maotai of today originated during the Qing Dynasty and first won international fame when winning a gold medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. Maotai received additional exposure in China and abroad when Zhou Enlai used the liquor to entertain Richard Nixon during the state banquet for the U.S. presidential visit to China in 1972. It is one of China’s official state banquet wines and claims to be one of the world’s three best known liquors (together with whisky and cognac).

Cylon’s timepiece

If the classic, 70’s Battlestar Galactica bad guys wore a watch, this would be it.

The L69 Time Module LED Wrist Watch has a bulky, hard-edged retro-futuristic styling with wonderful low-tech LED display that will have any aging sci-fi fan drooling. It’s going for ¥139,500 online. Haven’t found it in the US yet.

Parisian maps get a second life

I recently caught the opening of a really interesting show at Pilsen’s The Chicago Art Department Gallery. Co-Owner, KS Rives found some abandoned maps in Paris left by street book vendors whom hastily fled a rainstorm. Once dried, the maps became the basis for Rives current body of work. She painstaking Exacto-knives out details and reassembles them in to graphic and textural collages.

This Friday will be the last chance to see “Entre les deux,” her solo show at The Chicago Art Department.
